Judicial Independence: The Shared Core Values That Guide Decision Making
Thursday May 13, 2021 | 3:00pm – 4:30pm ET
Judicial independence means that judges are able to make decisions that aren’t driven by political pressure or public sentiment. But even independent judges still are accountable to shared core values. Judges are part of an institutional culture grounded in evidence-based decision making, procedural due process, and an ethical obligation to follow the law even when one might prefer a different result. This panel will explore how judges have drawn upon these cultural values in tough cases, especially in cases of high public interest or political significance, and how that experience has affected them.
